Don Pepe Taqueria and Mexican Grill

This was definitely a pleasant surprise. I never thought I would see the day when Poinciana had a Mexican restaurant. I guess dreams do come true. Don Pepe is located on Cypress Parkway and Doverplum. In The Promenade plaza. Known to many as the Publix plaza. A bit hard to find, but well worth the search.

When I entered I was greeted by Daphne. She filled me in on the protocol. You come to the counter, you order, she gives you a number, you have a seat, and she brings the food out to you. Nice and simple. The authentic Mexican music playing in the background reminded me of my Dad singing early Saturday mornings. Most places in Kissimmee play any regular Spanish music.

Chips and Salsa were very good. The salsa was not as spicy as I expected it to be, but flavorful. The chips were nice and crunchy. Had way too many of them. Nice. The folks who seem to be the owners were not very welcoming. Mind you, they were working hard in the back, but in no moment asked how everything was going and how the food tasted. Daphne seemed to be the only one making the magic happen.

You can’t ever go wrong with Jarritos. Tamarind was the way to go today. Yes, you are reading that correctly. 100 percent sugar.

Enchiladas Verdes with cheese. I had asked Daphne what she suggested and this was her choice. I like ordering them with cheese. Was expecting white cheese, but the yellow did not disappoint. I noticed people of different races coming in. That makes me happy to know food crosses all cultures.

It was a very generous portion. The prices are not bad at Don Pepe’s. While siting there several locals ordered the natural juices. That will be my choice for the next time.

The decor was amazing. I am a fan of Mexican restaurants since I grew up in Chicago, but have never seen this type of set up. Love it. I am hoping to come back with @vbterp and try some of their tacos. That tends to be our go to order in any new Mexican restaurant.

Operating hours are pretty good.  Open late. They have only been opened for a year, but I see them being successful in this area. I am hoping the community will be open to a Mexican restaurant. Don Pepe has found a niche here and should be here to stay. Daphne, gracias por todo. The service was awesome and the food was great.

Taco Norteño

This was a great start of my day. I was sent out to work in Winter Garden Florida. It’s a good 35 minutes from home with traffic. I took the Turnpike North and got off at 50 to Winter Garden.

As soon as I got off the exit I noticed this deliciousness. It was only about 9:40am, but I had to stop and get some tacos for breakfast.

The place is very nice. Very clean. One cook this morning and one gentleman who rung me up at the front.

I asked if I could get tacos. The gentleman said, “you can order whatever you like”. Menu was sweet and concise.

After ordering I had to go straight to the Salsa Bar. All the cilantro and onions you can put on your tacos. Not to mention all the hot sauces. This was heavenly.

Steak Tacos with onions and cilantro. This is my favorite way of eating an authentic taco. The steak was made perfectly. The flavors of the meat is what I have been craving since I left Chicago in 1999.

I had to take another picture of them since they looked and tasted so good.

The customer service was okay. Not overly friendly, but not rude either. The #food can be seen cooked which makes me feel safe. I plan to come back and try their enchiladas and other menu items.

La Choza (Cozumel, Mexico)

This one is all thanks to Caitlyn. @tarajroth and I owe you big for this one.

@Tarajroth and I had never walked this far off the main road for lunch in Cozumel. We always ask around on the ship where the best places are at.

The entrance was awesome. We were so glad that we had made it. It was windy and we were lost for a bit, so it was nice when we arrived to a great looking place.

Several crew members here which makes me always believe its a great place. Wifi is available. This is always a must when we find a place to eat.

Chris was our server today. Great guy. Very friendly. We started off with our usual Mexican cokes.

Chips with queso sauce.

Arrachera Steak with beans and guacamole

Sopa Azteca.

Avocado Pie. Okay, so before you make that face, let me explain. Chris said we had to try it. @Tarajroth and I love Avocado, but we didn’t know about a pie. We knew it would be a bit before we came back to Cozumel, so we had to try it. Absolutely amazing. So good! It was frozen so we had to dig in. Yummy!!

Overall, way better than I ever expected. This place is nice and it’s very clean. Servers are all great. It’s a team effort. Prices are great. Ask for Chris. He has great recommendations.

Big Mama’s (Costa Maya)

The unexpected surprises are always the best. @tarajroth and I had a small window to “jump off the ship” and go and get a bite to eat. My buddy Bam from DCL suggested a place called Big Mama’s.

My favorite part of the story was him saying that it was not fancy and that we would get to see Big Mama while there. @Tarajroth and I looked at each other and agreed it had to be done.

It was a rainy day. For some strange reason I had my umbrella with me and we walked quite a bit to find a taxi. Long story on why taxis aren’t allowed anymore near the pier. We found a taxi and we were on our way.

When we arrived Bam was there at Big Mama’s. I always love when people suggest a place that they personally eat it. When we arrived we were greeted by Big Mama. Sweet woman who has owned the restaurant for a year now.

Hugo was our server today. we stayed under the small hut. We had the option of sitting by the beach, but the rain stopped us from doing it today.

Big Mama was standing in the front area of the restaurant advertising to all the tourist stopping by bragging about her fresh fruit Margaritas.

Big Mama had asked if I wanted some serious hot sauce and my answer without hesitation was yes.
The tears would not stop. This stuff was very spicy. I loved it.

Fresh Guacamole. @Tarajroth has this philosophy. If the guacamole is good then all the rest of the dishes have to be good. Now you see why I love this woman.

Steak Burrito

Cheese enchiladas with green sauce.

Overall a nice place. Don’t expect anything fancy. This is not for regular tourist. This place is for people who love local eats. Everyone is down to earth. They are all very attentive as soon as you arrive. The food is good. Mexican coke is a must. Guacamole is also a must. Big Mama is greeting everyone with a big smile. Check it out for yourself.

El Gordo Restaurant

Thanks to good friends who recommend great restaurants in Chicago. I was in Chicago visiting my parents for a few days.

Chicago has so many local restaurants that have been here for several years and have the same customers coming here for years. My favorite type of food to eat while I am here is Mexican. Orlando seems to be lacking compared to Chicago.

@Tarajroth ordered the Strawberry Margarita.

@Xobejm ordered their Lemonade.

Fresh guacamole. It was just okay. Nothing to write home about. Didn’t taste as fresh as it claimed it would.

Queso fundido with chorizo. Now, this one was perfect. I ordered it with corn tortillas. All that cheese would make @wholycheesus very happy.

Had to take a pic of this. It is the way to the bar that they have next door.

Burrito Suizo de Carne Asada. Later I will show the inside. Huge portions! This was very tasty. I ate half and took the other half home. I always finish all my food, but tonight I couldn’t.

Guisado De Puerco. This was Papi’s dish. Papi wanted it as spicy as possible. The server suggested the green sauce. Papi loved how spicy it was and loved the flavor.

Enchiladas Suizas de Pollo. This was Ita’s dish. Ita liked them. She didn’t love them. The red sauce was a bit overwhelming for her.

Chimichanga De Pollo with rice and beans. This was my friends dish.

@xobejm ordered the steak tacos. They came with lettuce which is a first for me. She seemed to have liked them. She prefers just onions and cilantro.

Torta de Carne Asada. This was my others friends dish. It looked fantastic.

Burrito Suizo (inside shot) I like to order it with steak, onions, and cilantro. The meat was well prepared and it truly was the perfect bite.

Cheesecake. Very good.

Tres Leches. Their best dessert in the restaurant in my opinion.

Flan. I did not like it. As I mention in my other blogs, I am very picky about my flan. This is one did not pass the test.

All three desserts. See if you can find the hidden Mickey (Disney reference)

Great place to come and hang out. Very loud when we went. Soccer games are playing in the background and kids are screaming. Our server was very helpful and patient with us. The woman who I spoke to at the register had a rude sort of attitude when I asked about parking in the back. Not a great way to impress a customer when entering. Food was great! The guacamole needs some help.

El Tenampa Mexican Restaurant

With their new and improved look Tenampa is leading the way in Mexican food in this area. Rated as one of the best in any app, website, review, etc. This is a hard place to get into. Always busy! Full of people from literally all over the world.

It used to look pretty bad and beat up. The parking lot is still a little scary, but I like how they spruced this place up.

Today was a daddy daughter day. @Xobejm was feeling adventurous so we decided to come to Tenampa.

We arrived right at 5:00pm. I knew that would be a good time to beat all the local traffic and the tourist traffic as well. Tenampa is next to the India Diner.

Even the menu got a facelift. Loads to choose from. @Xobejm decided to play it safe and order the quesadilla. I had to get the steak.

Jugo de Mango, Piña, and Lemonade. Lucia our server brought it out for us to try their different jugos. Very tasty. Our favorite was the Lemonade. We also had to make it into a Mickey Mouse shape. : )

I ordered the jugo de guayaba. This jugo hits the spot all the time. Delicioso!

Chips and salsa to start our food adventure. We always have to be careful with how much we eat because we don’t want to get too full. Now….on with the FOOD STUFF!!!!

Arrachera El Tenampa. Steak with cactus and grilled onions,
rice, beans, avocado, and pico de gallo. It deserved two pictures. The meat was outstanding and the hot pepper was super spicy. That made me very happy.

Chicken and Cheese quesadilla with rice and beans. This was @xobejm dish. She was so overwhelmed with all the choices she decided to go the safe route.

Flan. Ok, ok. I know I say the same old thing every time. I am not a fan, but I had to try it. Made for a great photo too. This flan was great. Seriously, over the top great. Maybe I am becoming a fan of flan now.

Tres Leches. This was interesting. The berries in the middle just didn’t do it for me. The icing on the top is good. Not my favorite. I rather go with the flan.

Overall great place.
Lucia, Gracias for the great customer service. You were awesome!

Taqueria Casas

Casas has been opened in this location for about 2 years now. Maybe a bit more. @Tarajroth and I have come here for lunch. The tacos are not the best, but they are good.

The only issue I have about this place is that’s it’s too loud. They always have the radio station playing and it’s always at full blast. Sometimes it’s music and sometimes it’s just talk shows.

It’s a nice place. Always looks clean when we walk in. Today they were mopping the floors so it all was extremely clean this morning. Lots to choose from on the menu and the prices are great. I came for breakfast today.

Torta (Sausage and Egg). The man at the counter asked if I wanted it spicy and I said EXTRA! They put the works in this sandwich. Avocado, mayo, sausage (which remind me of hot dogs) lettuce, jalapenos, etc. This was a great morning breakfast.

Come and check them out for lunch and dinner. Good food at amazing prices.
