Poncitlan Jalisco | Foodbidden

Poncitlan Jalisco

I was craving a good Mexican breakfast for about three years now. Which was the last time I was here.

This was a great way to start my morning. I flew in to Chicago today and my parents took me straight to their favorite Mexican breakfast place. Poncitlan has been here for years. They have become good friends with my parents. Jose the owner of Poncitlan jokes with my dad about which soccer team they root for.

The place is pretty big. I mean it is no Kissimmee. This has much room and the staff here are working hard in the kitchen making every order as quickly as possible.

Guacamole. I love going to good Mexican restaurants and ordering this. All of the ingredients nice and fresh. Just what the doctor ordered.

Salsa and Guacamole.
Elvia was our server today. When we walked in the table was set and the menus laid on the table. Elvia knew my parents would be coming today since they come every Sunday. The place gets full quickly with all the locals. By the time we left people were waiting outside to be seated. Now lets talk FOOD!!

Desayuno Poncitlan. The Poncitlan breakfast. 3 over easy eggs, topped with ranchero sauce and ribeye.

Desayuno Poncitlan.
This is the same dish with no ranchero sauce. My mom and dad like it plain. I enjoyed it with the sauce on top.

Chilaquiles Rojos.
I was very hungry after a short flight from Orlando. I always have to order one more thing just to have something extra. I ordered this as a side. It tends to come with eggs and steak as well.

Elvia y Jose, Gracias for todo. Mis papas siempre hablan de ustedes y que siempre los tratan muy bien. Se los agradezco mucho.

Hot Diggity Dogs

This morning was a quick and dirty stop. We were at Illinois Masonic for family matters and had a chance to get a quick bite to eat.

Funny, my mom told me about this place and I came with her and my cousins. It was 10:00am Chicago time, but I am still on Florida time and had to eat lunch. So, I had a hot dog for breakfast.

Bright little place. Right under the Wellington stop of the Brown Line. The place smells great when you walk in.

The stools give this place a nice touch. All the sports memorabilia takes me back to my childhood.
Now, lets talk COMIDA!!!

Chicago Hot Dog with French Fries. Oh man!!! It had been at least three years since tasting a Chicago hot dog. Last time was with my friend Rob Russo. When I came to Chi with my family.

My family was saying the owner is super nice. I didn’t get a chance to meet him. They also said the place has been here for over 5 years. Great place. Come and check it out.

Andy’s Thai Kitchen

Eating in Chicago is always a treat. You will never know what you will find. Again, staying close to Masonic hospital this was walking distance. I came here with my mom and her friend Lillian.

Nice place. There were some locals eating here. They left and I was able to take the pic. It is cash only, no credit cards. That did strike me as odd.

We were hungry and wanted to eat a bit of everything today. Unfortunately, because it was cash only we had to make sure we limited our order.

Started off with my usual Thai Tea. I like the glass they served it in.

Satay is always my go to dish in any Thai restaurant. Lillian really liked these.

Gyoza is also a must. This was my favorite part of the meal today. Very good.

Tom Yum. My mom and Lillian got this dish. I felt bad for Lillian because she didn’t like it. She ordered more Satay and was good with just that.

Duck Curry with white rice. Nice and spicy. The pineapple, grapes, and tomatoes were a little too much for me. I only ate the duck.

So, here was the overall impression from all of us today. The food was okay. Good, but not great. Also, cash only stinks. We always feel more liberty ordering when we can pay by card. Lastly, too expensive. Now remember I was born in raised in Chicago, but this was too pricey.

City Cafe

Bright and early for breakfast. This is the place we ate two years ago in Chicago with @tarajroth and @xobejm. Right near my parents house.

My parents call it “Los Muchachos” which means the guys. Pedro and Jose are the owners now for 3 years. Under new management it has taken a simple breakfast menu and transformed it to something amazing.

It’s a very nice place. Clean and very diner like. It’s smells like home cooking as soon as you open the door. “Los Muchachos” always as friendly as ever greeting you as you walk in.

The usual suspects in the morning. My parents being one of those folks as well. Locals come from near and far to have their appetite curbed. Now, let’s talk COMIDA!!

The 2-2-2 Corner Special
Your choice of two pieces of French toast two pieces of bacon two pieces of sausage and two eggs over medium.
These were my pickings. It tends to come with one protein but I always choose both.

Chilaquiles with eggs over easy. This was Mommy-Bidden’s choice. She loves coming here for the Chilaquiles for breakfast. Notice the eggs on top. Delicious. My mom had me try some and they were great.

The food is great. Customer service AWESOME!!

Brasa Roja

Pardon the odd picture. If I would have taken a step back I would have gotten run over by several cars. Always excitement in Chicago.

My mom has been here about ten times. She is no stranger to this place. She comes in the morning and has her usual empanadas. Tonight our server was Johnjairo.

I loved seeing the fire going and seeing the rotisserie dripping. It made me very hungry. Johnjairo was nice enough to have me take a picture of the flame.

Mom started off with a Batido de Lulo. (Soursop shake). I gave it a try to see how it tasted. It was nice. Sweet. Pretty good. And I had to Google what Soursop was. I am sure you will too.

Mine, the usual. No matter where I go. Una Colombiana for me. I enjoy this drink a little too much. Now let’s talk COMIDA!!!

Empanadas De Carne. Oh yeah!! You can’t ever go wrong with these in a Colombian restaurant. Especially this one. This was Mommy Bidden’s order.

This is my moms favorite one. Aborrajado. (Plantain with cheese and guava paste). Holy mother of delectable items!! This is amazing. Didn’t realize this even existed on a Colombian menu.

Char broiled Chicken and New York Strip combo served with potato, cassava, and plantain.
This dish warrants two pictures. The steak was perfect and the chicken was just right. Lots of food. Perfect for me.

This place is a must try for any local or tourist. Great food and amazing prices.

Johnjairo, Gracias por su atención. La comida esta muy rica. Espero regresar pronto.

Bakin’ & Eggs

Chicago breakfast! I love my mom for joining me on my adventures. She was a bit hesitant at first.

I had seen this place while visiting my dad at the hospital and the name caught my eye.

We were greeted by Raña. With a roll of the tongue on the R. Very sweet woman. Latina at heart.

The cupcakes and the lattes looked amazing. Wish I could have tried one. We were too full after our meal.

The tables were put together too close. Which could be an issue if you are seated next to a stranger, but luckily it was just us in this area.

Oh Chicago. How I have missed you. Although, the one thing I didn’t like was paying for parking on Lincoln. It used to be free. Now you feel rushed while eating because of the time limit on the meter. Enough about that, LET’S TALK FOOD!!

Frittata Chorizo
Sautéed red onion, potatoes, queso fresco topped with fresh avocado, jalapeño, sour cream, and giardiniera on the side.

Breakfast burrito with fruit.
Bacon, eggs, cheddar, sautéed onions, and peppers, black bean salad, tomatillo avocado salsa, sour cream.

Chilaquiles and Eggs over easy.
We have to always order a bit more. Mom and I can eat.

Raña, thank you so much for your friendly service and for being Latina at heart. My mom said she would be coming back soon. She is hoping you will be there. Gracias.

Brazil Express Churrasco Grill | Foodbidden

Brazil Express Churrasco Grill

Thank you so much to Vinny, Laura, Anny, Hector for such a wonderful meal. This invitation was courtesy of the Morales family. Wow! What a great place this was. Located inside Nantucket Square in Schaumburg.

Established here in 2012 Brazil Express has been pleasing locals with their Churrasco grill ever since their doors opened. We arrived around 6:15pm and we were greeted promptly. As we were being seated I was amazed by the salad bar.

So much healthiness to choose from. I haven’t seen these many veggies in my life. Nor has my body had any since blogging.

I figured I would try a bit of everything. All of the items were fresh. The lettuce, tomato, cheese, etc. all were very good starters to what we were about to face.

When in Rome……A Guarana soda is always a must. Our server best described it as a better tasting version of Ginger Ale. I went more with a Cream Soda taste. Maybe a mixture of both.

Cheese bread. I wish I could give you the name. It was put on the table and it smelled fantastic. I took a bite and it was truly the perfect bite. Warm bread with cheese inside. I needed ten more of these.

Mashed Potatoes and Sweet Bananas. Now these are not your usual plantains. These have a different flavor and seemed to be put on a grill.

Black Beans and White Rice. This is something you can serve yourself from the salad bar area. There are soups to choose from as well. Now…….LET’S TALK FOOD!!

I think the pictures are self explanatory. Little did I know what I was getting myself into. This was a smorgasbord of meats. Meats and meats galore. And oh yeah, did I mention meats? Chicken, Filet Mignon, Chicken wrapped in Bacon, Parmesan encrusted Pork (new item), Garlic Steak, and Sausage. Hector and Laura found this place and come here as often as they can. If I lived around here I would too.

Now the concept is simple. Green card placed on the stand at the table means bring meat. Green card down means stop serving meat.

Brazil Express does not disappoint, not only with the amount of food, but the amazing prices they offer. Every single thing was delicious. You can ask for the meat to be cooked to your liking and they will oblige. Customer service is top notch here.

The flavor of the meats are out of this world. Every time they would cut me a slice of meat I would get nervous and use my little “Operation” type pinchers and grab the meat that was sliced for me.

Brazilian Flan. I am seeing a hidden Mickey. Anyone else? I am sure it’s just me. This dessert is outstanding. I have mentioned my dislike of flan in previous post. This one, other than Maria’s mom, is definitely my favorite.

Anny ordered the Key Lime Pie and it was very good. They had a variety of desserts to choose from, but we could only “stomach” two of them.

It was an amazing experience. The only thing missing is the Feast Shot. I was so engaged in good conversation and good food that it slipped my mind. Oh well, means I better get back here soon.

I do have to say that the final touch made the evening awesome. While walking towards the door ready to exit, the team member from Brazil Express opened the door for us and let us out and wished us a good night. You don’t get that type of service very often in most places.

Laura, Vinny, Anny, Hector, Thanks for an amazing meal and amazing company. This was a great recommendation. Abrazos!!

Man-Jo-Vin Restaurant | Foodbidden

Man-Jo-Vin Restaurant

Childhood memories in this place. Kenneth, Kim, Jerry, Susan, Tiffany, Larry, Tony, Michael, etc. All the usual suspects from Audubon elementary school. I felt like Madonna singing, “This used to be my playground”
Located on Damen and Melrose Man-jo’s has been here since 1953. The team members working here today were here working 20 years ago. Amazing!

The place is squeaky clean. Not what it was before. I remember it being bigger as well. Or maybe I am just getting bigger now.

It’s a much nicer place and my mom and I were impressed with how clean the restrooms were. This whole area had changed from when I grew up here. Now, LET’S TALK FOOD!!!

Chicago Style Hot Dogs. This was mom’s order.

Jumbo Italian Beef with hot peppers. This was my order. We got one To Go for Pops.

Great food. Customer service is good. It was nice to reminisce about the good old days. I hadn’t eaten here for over 18 years. It was nice to be back.

El Gordo Restaurant | Foodbidden

El Gordo Restaurant

Thanks to good friends who recommend great restaurants in Chicago. I was in Chicago visiting my parents for a few days.

Chicago has so many local restaurants that have been here for several years and have the same customers coming here for years. My favorite type of food to eat while I am here is Mexican. Orlando seems to be lacking compared to Chicago.

@Tarajroth ordered the Strawberry Margarita.

@Xobejm ordered their Lemonade.

Fresh guacamole. It was just okay. Nothing to write home about. Didn’t taste as fresh as it claimed it would.

Queso fundido with chorizo. Now, this one was perfect. I ordered it with corn tortillas. All that cheese would make @wholycheesus very happy.

Had to take a pic of this. It is the way to the bar that they have next door.

Burrito Suizo de Carne Asada. Later I will show the inside. Huge portions! This was very tasty. I ate half and took the other half home. I always finish all my food, but tonight I couldn’t.

Guisado De Puerco. This was Papi’s dish. Papi wanted it as spicy as possible. The server suggested the green sauce. Papi loved how spicy it was and loved the flavor.

Enchiladas Suizas de Pollo. This was Ita’s dish. Ita liked them. She didn’t love them. The red sauce was a bit overwhelming for her.

Chimichanga De Pollo with rice and beans. This was my friends dish.

@xobejm ordered the steak tacos. They came with lettuce which is a first for me. She seemed to have liked them. She prefers just onions and cilantro.

Torta de Carne Asada. This was my others friends dish. It looked fantastic.

Burrito Suizo (inside shot) I like to order it with steak, onions, and cilantro. The meat was well prepared and it truly was the perfect bite.

Cheesecake. Very good.

Tres Leches. Their best dessert in the restaurant in my opinion.

Flan. I did not like it. As I mention in my other blogs, I am very picky about my flan. This is one did not pass the test.

All three desserts. See if you can find the hidden Mickey (Disney reference)

Great place to come and hang out. Very loud when we went. Soccer games are playing in the background and kids are screaming. Our server was very helpful and patient with us. The woman who I spoke to at the register had a rude sort of attitude when I asked about parking in the back. Not a great way to impress a customer when entering. Food was great! The guacamole needs some help.

Dapper’s Restaurant

I am guessing there is a West somewhere around these parts as well. My mom comes here every week with a friend.

My dad says this place is only for senior citizens and doesn’t like coming here. I said we need to check it out ourselves and see what happens.

For as long as I can remember this place has been here. It is located in the Addison Mall. There is a Target store within this mall now. My, my, how things have changed. I used to bank at Household Bank way back in the day. Ahhhh…….memories.

This morning we were hungry and ready for a great breakfast. As you all know my favorite is having a Mexican breakfast with steak, eggs, Chilaquiles, rice, and beans. But today I had to do something different.

Thin Waffle. Yep, that’s what I said. My mom special orders a thin waffle. This was delicious. My mom gave me a bite and I swear I am ordering it like this from now on.

Eggs, over medium, hash browns with cheese sauce and sausage.

Side of Ham. This was my favorite part of the meal.

@Xobejm had her usual. Scrambled eggs, sausage, and hash browns.

@Tarajroth had the French Toast, Eggs, over easy, and bacon

Papi had the huevos rancheros omelette and hash browns.

Pancakes. They must put something in the batter. These are very tasty.

Feast Shot. I have to always include these shots. So much joy to eat with family.

Great service and decent prices. Coffee keeps on coming and the restaurant is very clean. Nice and quiet which is what I loved the most about it. This is a must try in the city.

Sunshine Restaurant

We had to laugh about this one. It’s closed on Tuesdays. Random day, but they are not open. We had to come back on Wednesday just to give it a try.

Pete, the owner has had this place for 43 years. He is still there making all the magic happen in the kitchen.

Peggy was our server today and she was awesome. Super friendly!

The hot sauces were the first thing on our table. They must know our style. Papi and I love hot sauces.

The rib eye was a must for breakfast. Ita ordered this dish and finished the whole thing.

Mine was the Chopped Steak with Onions. Very tasty. It was like having a well made burger for breakfast. YUM!

@Xobejm had the Waffle. Plain as always. This was the best waffle we had all week. My mom had a waffle this week, but this one was much better.

Scrambled Eggs, Ham, and Hash browns. We tend to get the usual so we can compare and see which is better.

Eggs over medium, hash browns, and ham. So far I would say Sunshine has my vote. The food is good and the service is even better.

Sunshine Skillet. With all the fixins inside. Green peppers, corn beef hash, and topped with eggs done your way.

Feast shot. We enjoy every moment of eating. Never a dull moment at the table. BUEN PROVECHO to us!

Sunshine Restaurant is a must while in the city. They have a second restaurant as well. Pete, the owner is a very laid back guy who loves to work and is enjoying every moment of it. 43 years and going strong. If you are ever in the area check them out. Ask for Peggy.
